The first time I saw Ms. Badu’s Window Seat video, I was completely captivated by the song – it has a nice strolling vibe to it like a Sunday afternoon in the park. Coupled with her sweet-like-honey vocals and a solid groove, this song had me loving it immediately.
What’s kinda funny, though, is the fact that I didn’t really see the video the first time I “saw it” on YouTube. I clicked play and within 30 seconds got sidetracked with an incoming email – I then proceeded to “see” the video three more times as I worked on other tasks that snuck their way in.
So, by the time I actually viewed the video from start-to-finish, I was quite surprised…
- how could she actually do something like that……seriously…… just let the clothes fly – one by one…?
- how could she have done this in public……?……for…more…than…five…minutes…?
- how could someone so talented and respected as Ms. Badu do something like this…?
Ms. Badu recently commented about the hullabaloo on The Wanda Sykes Show, saying: “My point was grossly misunderstood all over America. J.F.K. is one of my heroes, one of the nation’s heroes. John F. Kennedy was a revolutionary; he was not afraid to butt heads with America, and I was not afraid to show America my butt-naked truth.”
Let’s get one thing straight: I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Badu’s music. I’m all about the Erykah Badu and her musical stylings. I think she’s a wonderful artist and philanthropist.
That noted, to see her do something like this is to sell herself so short. To hear her say why she did it makes me a little confused. I don’t necessarily think she’s close to jumping the shark; but this kinda move makes it look like she’s having a look-see at the tank.

HERE’S MY POINT: The moment you stray from your real talents to get some attention just to show your ‘butt-naked truth’ is the moment you’ve opened up some room for doubt. If you have a crazy idea that has some purpose behind it, then it’s worth giving shot. But if you’re putting yourself out there for a cool idea that doesn’t really serve as a piece to a puzzle……well……that’s a bit short-sighted.

What’s your take on this…? Where have you come close to or jumped the shark in your efforts…?
