Even though the guys from Chicago may have had a different meaning in their song, I’m gonna run with it in a different way here. Because too much of a good thing is…too much.
When my wife & I were working and living out of New York City, we would often have family and friends come over for a visit. We would always take em’ to some of our favorite New York’y areas like Central Park, Little Italy, Times Square, etc., as well as to a show or two.
Well, I would *always* make it a point to pitch the idea of having these visitors on see Blue Man Group – there’s just something about seeing that Tubes show in NYC that just gets me giddy!
Well, as luck would have it, my suggesting this show to everyone worked about half the time (woo-hoo!). I believe I saw that same show at least 15 or 20 times…! And I have to admit, even though I loved spending my money on that show when folks came in, the last few times I saw the show, I caught myself looking at my watch.
I still dug the show and had a great time, but that giddy thrill had gone. It appears that I had worn myself out.
Fast forward to 2010. We’re in Vegas for a conference and the opportunity to see these blue dudes comes up. Seeing as how these were the best guys we could see on this particular day (and since I hadn’t seen Tubes in about 10 years), I was able to convince my wife to see em’ once more in this show.
Not only did I have fun, but my joy and giddiness came back…! The music, the schtick, the ‘show’ was pretty much the same (with some new (and cool) Vegas additions); but the thrill was back! Turns out I just needed a little vacay from the performance.
This is kinda like the things we do with our work…looking at the same press release for hours on end can be a bit tiresome…working the same brochure copy for days can wear you down…developing a strategic plan for a client doesn’t have to be done in one sitting.
Take a breather…heck, take a few! Or why not just push back from your desk and just shut up & dance…! Every now and then, cutting loose from your work to catch a movie at 4pm or going to the gym during lunch can do wonders! May even bring back the ‘thrill’ of it all.
How do you take a breather…? What helps you unwind after looking at the same document for days…?
